Regardless of where you live, you are bound to experience a bout of rain at some point of the year. The rainy season is a hoot. Everything is clean and glistening. The air is fresh and breezy. Who doesn’t love the rain? Of course, too much rain can be a little bothersome especially when it comes to winter clothing. The rainy season calls for special attire. Rain boots and raincoats are a must-have for everyone. Most garments are generally designed to resist moisture if they are machine washable.

Leather, however, is a little different and the most commonly used leather product is a leather jacket.

There are many benefits of a leather jacket. It is strong, functional and extremely durable. However, leather is still quite susceptible to damage; particularly the kind resulting from moisture. A small amount of moisture is not a problem for the tough and mighty leather, but when exposed to a prolonged period, moisture can cause significant leather damage. It settles into the pores of the leather and results in the formation of mildew and mold; both of which are extremely damaging and hard to repair.

So the question remains: can one wear a leather jacket in the rainy season? Of course, you can, but you need to be a little careful. First, let’s narrow down some of the advantages of wearing a leather jacket in the rain.

Waterproof

Leather jackets are waterproof. The outer leather layer allows the water to slide off of it thereby exhibiting a fantastic water-repelling quality. The rain, when it hits the leather jacket, forms little beads and rolls off leading the jacket and the wearer rain-proof. Hooded mens leather jackets are the best for the rainy season serving a dual function of a jacket and a raincoat. Who said you cannot be fashionable in the rain?

Lightweight

Leather jackets seem heavy, but they actually are not. By design, leather jackets are relatively lightweight and wearable. Perfect for layering, you can wear your jacket over other layers to keep you protected if the rain and the accompanying wind gets too harsh. In the rain, it is already quite difficult to manage things according to the situation. A heavy outer layer only makes it worse. A lightweight leather jacket should be the one for the time of the year.

Breathable

While some may think waterproofing and breathing ability do not go hand in hand but with a leather jacket, they do. In addition to being waterproof, leather jackets come with an inner lining that is usually made with different materials. All the materials used are designed to be breathable so that moisture cannot build up in them. If by any chance moisture does find its way into the jacket, it is nothing that air drying cannot fix. Additionally, this feature allows heat and sweat to evaporate from the jacket; a great feature to manage internal heat regulation. Stay comfortable and dry in a leather jacket this rainy season.

Easy to Stow

A leather jacket, despite being formal and fancy, is easy to manage and thus can be stowed away neatly. You can easily bundle them up and stow them making them great for traveling as well. Synthetic leather jackets that come with a thinner lining are ideal for this purpose. Many advise against folding up a leather jacket thinking it will get ruined, but a leather jacket is malleable in that aspect. If you fold it neatly, there is no fear of any wrinkling or lines. Hang your jacket for a while, and the folds get erased on their own.

Fashionable

The most important benefit of a leather jacket is its edgy aura. Leather jackets exude a sexy and effortless vibe which is perfect for layering. A custom leather jacket just completes every outfit. Wear your jacket over a casual outfit or something a little bit more special; f there is one thing that is guaranteed is a killer fashion statement. They are surely chicer than your average raincoat after all.

Apply a water-resistant leather lotion on your jacket. There is a wide assortment of lotions to choose from each with their own unique set of properties. All of them, however, do a fantastic job of protecting leather from the destructive effects of moisture. This external protective barrier is a savior for your jacket in the rainy season.

Dry your leather jacket from time to time if it is regularly exposed to rain. If your jacket remains saturated with moisture, the jacket will get damage much faster, so the risk is automatically increased. After your jacket has been soaking in the rain, once you reach your destination, wipe it dry. This keeps the jacket protected even further. Make sure to not fold it up immediately. Leave the jacket out to air dry as well.

There are many different types of leather. A synthetic or faux leather jacket is the best when it comes to offering protection from the rain. It is designed to withstand the effects of moisture much better than real leather. So if you are looking for a jacket for the rainy season, it is best to get your hands on a synthetic leather jacket. They are just as good as pure leather jackets and much more affordable. Who wouldn’t enjoy that?

Leather jackets are a true statement and versatile garment that can be worn with anything, to any occasion, and in any weather. Their effortlessly simple aura is hard to compete with so rest assured, a leather jacket is an investment. One of the standout benefits of a leather jacket is its longevity. A leather jacket, if properly taken care of, only gets better with time.
